A young man of just 23 decided to leave the capital, Belo Horizonte, to start producing vegetables in a hydroponic system with his father-in-law in the municipality of José Raydan, in the Rio Doce Valley, in Minas Gerais.
In the hydroponic system, all cultivation of the plant takes place in water, unlike the traditional method, which is done in soil. In this family's case, all of the lettuce is grown in three greenhouses, covering an area of 1,400 square meters of the property.
The young farmer Cássio Antônio de Silva Júnior is proving that in family farming, excellent results can be obtained with new cultivation systems. Currently, the young man, together with his father-in-law, Ronaldo Torquato, produces about 9,000 heads of lettuce per month. Because the business is thriving, the family plans to increase production to 27,000 heads per month and also to invest in other vegetables.
The family also intends to soon open a gondola with water, a different method for selling lettuce. They plan to install, in a supermarket in the municipality of Capelinha – MG, a type of equipment with circulating water to keep the greens “growing.”
