UNESP and UNICAMP researchers develop spreadsheet for purchasing a grain storage silo

Brazil is currently one of the largest grain producers, with a harvest of more than 200 million metric tons per year, according to an estimate by the National Supply Company (CONAB).

To store grain production, sufficient storage systems need to be developed, which is still an area requiring large investments in Brazil. According to the National Supply Company, Brazil has a total capacity of approximately 145 million metric tons, below the minimum recommendations established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This deficit makes storage difficult for family farmers, who need to sell their grain immediately after harvest and cannot wait for a more opportune time to sell.

Researchers Armando Kazuo Fuji, Jader Picanço Ribeiro and Rafael Manzoli - from UNESP and UNICAMP - propose the creation of a spreadsheet to help family farmers calculate the economic feasibility of purchasing a small-capacity metal silo (102 bags). The study is based on the need to help farmers fit the cost of acquiring the equipment into their budget by calculating the rate of return on the investment.
