The evolution of technology in the field over the last 50 years was a key factor in the sector's evolution, resulting in one of the largest research networks in the world. Thanks to universities, research institutes and Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation), it became possible to use the land in both the harvest and off-season periods, maximizing and making the farmer's business more profitable.
Another preponderant factor in this evolution was mechanization: while in Brazil in the 1960s there were only 61,000 tractors in operation, there are now about 1 million agricultural machines of various types and sizes across the country. This made possible a reduction in production costs and specialization of workers, offering workers a better quality of life by replacing a manual practice with a mechanized one, and better-quality products on the market.
