Software helps with herd selection

With constant technological advances in the agricultural sector, it is becoming common to see the launch of software that helps farmers and cattle ranchers both with administrative management and with the handling and production of their activities and animals.

In the interior of the state of São Paulo, in the city of Presidente Prudente, researchers at a university are working on the research and development of a computer program aimed at cattle ranchers. The program aims to give ranchers better profitability when choosing their herd. It works by entering the height and weight of each animal on the property, and then the program produces a series of charts indicating the animal's profile (low, medium, high, very high).

With the animal's profile, the producer can decide whether to put the animal to breeding or to fattening. For example, animals with a high body mass index are better for fattening, while animals with low body mass are better for breeding.

Through this example and other analyses, farmers will be able to make decisions that help reduce costs and optimize the property's profits.

The program is not yet available to cattle ranchers because it is in the second stage of development. In this second stage, the researchers will turn the program into an app, which they expect to make available within a year.
