Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) is extended until 2016

· By Beatriz Santos Bisi

The Rural Environmental Registry (CAR), whose registration deadline was May 6, 2015, had its extension announced this Monday (May 4), with a final regularization date of May 2016. According to data, so far only 52.8% of the estimated rural properties that fit the profile for environmental regularization have been registered.

The CAR is extremely important because it registers rural properties according to their conditions, which allows a process of recovering degraded areas within these properties, in accordance with the so-called Forest Law, Law 12,651, of 2012. The registry provides effective knowledge of what must be recovered and what is forest, and without the registration the producer is not entitled to financing lines, rural credit and other public policies.

In this way, the CAR serves as a database on rural properties and their conditions, which allows better control and greater benefits for producers. “There was significant adherence to the CAR and many farmers took part voluntarily in the regularization program,” says Izabella Teixeira, Minister of the Environment.
