Embrapa launches software to help manage temperate-climate fruit growing

· By Juliana Bernardes

This past Thursday (3rd), during the 38th Expointer, Embrapa launched the GestFrut tool with the aim of helping with the financial management of the production of 11 temperate-climate fruits. The software is available free of charge at www.embrapa.br/uva-e-vinho/Gestfrut.

"Fruit growing is an activity that, in general, has high added value and is present on a large share of family farms in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. These properties are responsible for about 60% of the national production of these fruits," said Joelsio Lazzarotto, a researcher at Embrapa Grape and Wine who is responsible for developing this project.

GestFrut was built using the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software, with the help of Visual Basic programs, and makes it possible to carry out economic analyses and assess feasibility and financial dynamics, also offering simulation fields to prevent risks or losses in the production system.

Despite the importance of the tool, Lazzarotto notes that most rural producers do not properly manage investments, costs and revenues. It is important to stress that digital inclusion is extremely important to the daily productivity of family farmers, since once management is supported by economic and financial tools, producers become part of a sustainable production system.
