CropBox: agriculture inside the box

Producing fruits and vegetables year-round is not an easy task, especially when the problems are lack of space and time. Faced with this problem, a U.S. company launched CropBox, a 30 m² container farm where it is possible to grow up to 2,800 plants of different types of crops.

From the outside, CropBox looks like one of those enormous metal boxes used for shipping on ocean vessels, but the inside is occupied by a modern hydroponic growing system that includes a 200-liter water reservoir, a propulsion pump, fluorescent lighting, a set of sensors and a camera that allows monitoring via smartphones and tablets.

The technology used in CropBox, according to Ben Greene, ensures savings of up to 90% in water and 80% in fertilizers. But the price of the container farm is still not very attractive: each container costs about R$172 thousand (US$ 43 thousand). According to the manufacturers, CropBox is an alternative for places that have little arable land.
