June 8 is celebrated as Citrus Grower's Day. Citrus growing is the cultivation of citrus fruits such as orange, lemon and tangerine.
The history of citrus growing began at the time of the discovery of Brazil. Between 1530 and 1540, the Portuguese brought and planted the first sweet orange seeds in the states of Bahia and São Paulo.
Since Brazil's ecological conditions and climate are favorable, sweet orange production was very satisfactory and productive, with juicier fruit of better quality than the oranges produced in Portugal. The state of São Paulo is currently the state with the largest orchard in the world, as it supplies about 90% of Brazilian orange juice exports.
The main goals of the citrus grower are to increase and improve investments, improve productivity and preserve the orchards. The citrus grower's care and dedication made citrus growing a highlight of the Brazilian economy.
