August 25 - Market Vendor's Day

In Brazil there is a special day to honor the market vendor, the worker who sells their products from simple structures made of stalls and counters.

Open-air markets boost the sale of family farming products and become a direct sales channel between farmers and consumers.

Recognized as one of the oldest forms of free market for agricultural products, the open-air market provides a pleasant space for urban consumers who increasingly seek quality of life through healthy eating.

Choosing to sell their products at open-air markets guarantees farmers profitability and drives the economy of many families who live in the countryside.

Little is known about the origins of open-air markets. Since the formation of the first cities around 3,000 B.C., forms of trade began to be organized in specific centers where people gathered to sell and buy what interested them. Commercial centers evolved in different ways, and the open-air market model we know today emerged in the Late Middle Ages, that is, from the 11th century on.
