Data on the costs required for tomato production

Tomato is one of the main vegetables produced in Brazil, with the State of Goiás being the largest contributor to this national production; the country is among the ten largest tomato producers in the world.

This source provides data on all the costs required for tomato production, collected through the website of the National Supply Company (CONAB), a body responsible for monitoring all agricultural production processes, that is, from planting through to the consumer.

Information about the origin of the data

CONAB (National Supply Company) is a public institution linked to MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply), responsible for managing agricultural and supply public policies, with the aim of ensuring that society's basic needs are met while preserving and stimulating market mechanisms.

Its regulatory instruments are the Minimum Price Guarantee, Premiums for Product Outflow, Option Contracts and Over-the-counter Sales (a program aimed at small livestock breeders and small agro-industries). There are also projects in which CONAB takes part, such as the Zero Hunger Project, for which it is responsible for storage, receiving logistics and distribution of the donations received.

Electronic auctions are also held to purchase food to serve Indigenous communities, quilombola communities and rural settlements that are in situations of need. And to support Family Farming, security mechanisms are made available, such as direct purchase, advance purchase, and purchase guarantee contracts. CONAB also makes data available on its website to better publicize its results and the data collected.

On the home page of the CONAB portal, “Agricultural information’’ was selected, then “Production cost” twice (the first in the menu on the left and the second on the button located in the upper right corner), and lastly “Production cost spreadsheets”. The spreadsheet is located on the second page as Custos PGPAF - March/2018.

Information about the data:

Among the query options available on the CONAB website, the files containing the databases can be downloaded in the “Microsoft Excel (XLS)” format.

Below are described the data attributes present in the database consulted that were used to develop the visualizations presented next.

CROP OPERATING EXPENSES: refers to all costs during processes such as: soil preparation, inputs, planting and crop management.

POST-HARVEST EXPENSES: refers to all costs during the harvesting, storage and transportation process.

FINANCIAL EXPENSES: refers to the interest the company must pay to its creditors.

FIXED COSTS: refers to the costs the company incurs regardless of its level of activity.

TOTAL COST: refers to the cost of producing tomatoes per hectare.

Data visualization

To demonstrate possible visualizations generated from the analysis of the data made available by the CONAB website, some visualizations were developed that make it possible to observe tomato production costs per hectare and per 1 kg.
